Michael L. Thal presents a delightful tale of a girl looking to belong while also facing the beginning of puberty and making new friends after yet another move. Her happiness is never complete, as she might have to leave her newfound contentment and settle in yet another school in an attempt to avoid the man stalking her. Thal combines a multi-cultural group with many of the same goals into a group of close friends who will do anything for each other. He touches on subjects not usually approached in middle grade, in such a way as to make them easy to understand.
I found this to be a delightful tale children from ages eight to twelve will enjoy. They'll sympathize with Koolura's determination to stay in her new school, and cheer when she uses her ingenuity to stop her stalker permanently. Parents will also enjoy this story, and it is a good way for families to open up about subjects they find difficult to approach.

The day Koolura was born, her mother died under strange circumstances. Eleven years later, Koolura realized why she and her father kept moving from one city to another. The reason had to do with Neb, a desperate homeless man who turned up in each new town to stalk her.
Koolura is unaware that this man once acquired a mysterious gun with the ability to collect the "cool" from those around him--cool that gives power to whoever possesses it. Eleven years earlier, fearful he was about to lose his weapon, Neb found his way into the maternity section of the local hospital where he downloaded all the gun's energy into a tiny newborn baby, intending to return and zap it out. But his plans were thwarted when he discovered that the baby and her father left town. Neb spends years searching for the child, who carries the powerful "cool", but each time he finds her, she and her father skip town.

The Legend of Koolura is an exciting novel that brought back memories from my own school days. (Some not very pleasant. (Where was the decoolizer when I needed it? LOL.
Little Koolura sets a good example for everyone around her. She is such a mature young lady who seems to be motherly at times. She's a great role model for children cool or not cool, Koolura's your girl.
Congratulations Mr. Thal on this superb novel. I hope to read more of your work soon.

She truly is "Cool." Fun read! Recommended for children who love an adventure!
The Legend of Koolura is a story of a 6th grade girl who, as an infant, got her "cool". Though Koolura has certain powers that come with the "cool" she suffers the same problems that many young kids face today - popularity, friendship and peer pressure.
On top of that, our young heroine is followed by a seedy looking, desperate man who wants her cool for himself, which would destroy her.
Michael Thal's imagination and ability to spin a great story will have you cheering and wanting more as Koolura uses her "cool" to help her friends, while staying one step ahead of the evil that stalks her. This is a great adventure that you and your children will want to read!
This fast-paced, perfect-for-summer, page-turner, The Legend of Koolura, will keep your interest from sinister start to 'wow' ending.
Michael Thal has captured a neat group of middle-school kids, all trying to find their way. As a former teacher, I know this is a tough age to teach and a challenging age to write for, too. Mr. Thal shows a clear respect for his audience, giving his readers a book that moves quickly following Koolura as she navigates her life, and learns the value of cool. Not a bad goal for anyone-enjoy!
